An early pastel piece. Back in the 1990’s I was still using pastel. I was plucking up the courage to use oils around this time.I was inspired by a wonderful wisteria tree outside ‘Insole Court’ in Cardiff. Although it wasn’t in bloom, it was impressive. Self portrait.  Pastel on Paper

An early pastel inspired by a wonderful, derelict Welsh Manor House and former tuberculosis sanitorium called Cefn Mably in South Wales, cruelly destroyed by fire in 1994. Brian, its loyal caretaker, allowed myself and friends to run riot (in a totally respectful way!) in its halls and provided me with amazing memories of a really magical time. It was my playground, muse, studio and obsession for 3 years, and I probably photographed every crumbling corner and rusting tap on my many visits. See them here. I created a series of pastels around the same time using these photographs. This particular work is set on one of the many staircases.   Pastel on Paper.

An early pastel piece. Back in the 1990’s I was still using pastel. I was plucking up the courage to use oils around this time. This is a self portrait in my then bathroom. I salvaged those wonderful Victorian tiles from a skip and the wooden slatted bath shelf was rescued from a derelict TB hospital.  Pastel on Paper

Self Portrait – Kahlo Style

This pastel is unashamedly in the style of Frida Kahlo. I did it back in 1995 for a ‘Fakes’ competition. It was runner up and featured in the ‘FAKES’ exhibition at the Raw Gallery in London. Frida Kahlo would often paint her pet monkeys on her shoulder with their arms around her neck. On my shoulder is Vasey. He was my beloved companion for 20 years. Here he has his tail wrapped around my neck too in a similar fashion. Pastel on paper
