The client (a repeat customer of my Spy portraits), wanted to portray her husband as Henry VIII in a Vanity Fair style portrait to celebrate his 50th birthday. Apparently, he believes he may be descended from Henry VIII.
I borrowed details from various Tudor portraits of Henry VIII. A little more ornate than my usual Spy portraits, all those ouches and slashes kept me busy for quite some time!
The caption along the bottom, ‘Regia Cordi Esse’, is Latin for ‘The Royal Heart’.
These are gentle caricatures, nothing too extreme. As Leslie Ward (Spy) said:
If I could sum up the art in a sentence, it would be that caricature should be a comic impression with a kindly touch, and always devoid of vulgarity.Leslie Ward – Wikipedia
